BIG Work Party in Halcyon Commons & Surrounds

Saturday, Oct. 28, 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (moderate rain or shine!)

Meet at Halcyon Commons (Halcyon Court at Prince Street)

Delicious refreshments (& water) courtesy of Whole Foods Market

Fresh coffee courtesy of Starbucks

Chat with neighbors & UC student volunteers from CalÕs Berkeley Project while we weed, mulch, pick up trash, and remove graffiti in the park and surrounding neighborhood. Please bring weeding and trimming tools (with labels) if you have them (extra tools will be available if you donÕt). LetÕs get our precious common space ready for the winter months!

Note: If thereÕs a public area in the larger neighborhood where youÕd especially like to see trash picked up or graffiti removed, please consider volunteering for an hour to lead a student crew out to clean it up! We will have plenty of volunteer help, but we depend on neighbors to guide the process so we get as much done as possible.

2. Halcyon Halloween? Who Can Lead for 45 Minutes 10/31?

For seven years, neighbor Susan Snyder hosted a simple but fun Halcyon Halloween Parade, where for 20-30 minutes neighborhood kids paraded around the park. While Susan no longer lives in our neighborhood (but is welcome back anytime!), it would be lovely to continue this tradition for an 8th year (we skipped last year due to lack of facilitator), but it depends on someone being willing to hold the container as kids and parents convene in the park. Is someone willing to do this for forty-five minutes on October 31, 2017? (HereÕs a sample announcement from the 2015 event: ÒHalloween Parade at Halcyon Commons, October 31, 6 p.m.! Join together with all the neighborhoods ghosts, goblins, witches, dinosaurs, dogs, and heroes to start off Halloween with our annual parade around Halcyon Commons! WeÕll start to gather at 6:00 p.m., with the parade beginning by 6:15 p.m. Come and join the parade and then trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. Kid-at-heart neighbors welcome to come cheer the kids on.Ó IÕm sure Susan would be willing to provide tips on how to keep the kids engaged while parading (as a watcher, I observed witches stepping forward, animals stepping forward, etc., and everyone making the sound that went with the costume, for example). No candy is involved (though trick-or-treating can follow afterward for those kids for whom itÕs appropriate). If youÕre inspired to keep this simple but sweet tradition going (over the years it has led to families and kids connecting who might not have met otherwise), please email halcyon92@gmail.com no later than October 24, and we will publicize through our usual HNA channels.

3. Halcyon Thrive Project Has Launched!

EditorÕs note: If youÕre intrigued by the idea of Halcyon Thrive, email HalcyonThrive@gmail.com with your address, phone, and email, and weÕll add you to our Halcyon Thrive Google group, a place where any member can suggest shared activities, either on a one-time basis, or as an ongoing project. All activities are opt-in (no obligation), and a digest option from the Google group means you can keep emails to no more than one a day. Join us!

HALCYON THRIVE!

A pilot project of Halcyon Neighborhood Association for Halcyon neighbors willing to take the next step in mutual support . . .

The goal of this one-year pilot project is to explore ways to offer some of the beneficial services and resources of a multigenerational Ashby Village–type program on an opt-in, voluntary basis without monetary exchange. At an initial Planning Circle for Halcyon Thrive, neighbors brainstormed possibilities for shared activities and ways of offering support to one another. Events connected with the first three active ÒspokesÓ of what weÕre envisioning as the Halcyon Thrive circle or wheel have included:

* A monthly ÒconversationsÓ program at neighborsÕ homes sharing areas of interest and knowledge while getting to know one another better. Envisioned as an occasional, planned event hosted in the home of a Halcyon neighborhood resident, ÒconversationsÓ had its first gathering on Tuesday, September 26th in the early evening (7-8:30 p.m.) where Fulton Street neighbor and professor emeritus Joe Fischer gave a talk about and display of Indonesian art and textiles. The ÒconversationsÓ are designed to promote an exchange among participants requiring nothing but an interest in the topic. Other ÒconversationsÓ are being planned throughout the Fall and will include gatherings focused on ecological education, and issues concerning private and public resources and responsibility. Due to space limitations, reservations are required. Join Halcyon Thrive to be part of the ÒconversationsÓ community.

* The ÒArt in CommunityÓ spoke of Halcyon Thrive will hold its first get-together on Sunday, October 15, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. WeÕre looking for a few folks, ages 10 and older, who would enjoy making art together while getting to know their neighbors. The first get-together will be a one-shot project, no cost, and no supplies or experience needed, making rice-paper booklets. If youÕre interested in having creative fun while meeting your neighbors on a Sunday morning, join Halcyon Thrive and stay tuned for the project details.

* A kickoff social gathering for Halcyon Thrive members took place on Sunday, October 1, at a late-afternoon deck and yard party with appetizers and desserts catered by a Halcyon Thrive member whoÕs a chef. Thirty of our now-nearing fifty Halcyon Thrive members attended, and those present also got to toast HNA Co-Chair Nancy CarletonÕs sixtieth birthday and welcome back HNA Co-Chair John Steere, now in recovery from a serious illness.

* A Halcyon Thrive Caring Circle providing opportunities for participating neighbors to ask for and offer support to one another by listing needs and signing up to meet them so we can better Òthrive-in-placeÓ is in process, and will be announced at a general Halcyon Thrive meeting at Chochmat HaLev planned in November (committee work in progress, likely to be hosted on the Lotsa Helping Hands site by the beginning of November).

If you live in the Halcyon neighborhood (Telegraph to Adeline, Ashby to Woolsey, in South Berkeley) and want to be part of the Halcyon Thrive pilot project, including the Halcyon Thrive Caring Circle, please email your name, address, phone, and email to HalcyonThrive@gmail.com.

4. Disaster Preparedness Update from the HNA CERT Group

HNA CERT is delighted to report that 32 members took place in SeptemberÕs class, Light Search And Rescue, Part One, a classroom introduction to the basics of search and rescue. Students who took the first class may try out those skills in real life during Part Two of the class, a simulated SAR mission. Students who did not attend Part One may take Part Two if they obtain the consent of the instructor. Please email hnacert@gmail.com if interested. Students who did complete the first class will be notified of time and place for the second class by email.

EditorÕs note: Received from Whole Foods Market.

Next Drop-in Progress Meeting, Friday, November 10, 8:15-9:00 a.m.

Whole Foods Market (check in at Customer Service)

These meetings are held at the Community Table at the front of the store or outside, and the purpose is to share our plans for ongoing changes in the store, street litter control, and progress on any of the ongoing issues we discuss [with HNA reps and nearby neighbors]. The Store Team Leader is usually present, and anyone is welcome to join us. Of course there will be complimentary coffee or tea. Our goal is to follow up immediately on any issues that we hear about, and to hear how the store can be a better neighbor. As always, if there are ever any urgent issues, please call the store at 510-649-1333 and ask for the shift manager on duty. We have new shift leaders being trained, so please send an email to the group below so we can follow up appropriately. Always feel free to swing by too, if youÕd like to have a word with us.
